“R

eport,” said Sub-Commander Nelzod, sitting in Phantom’s command chair.

Her second-in-command, Thalzer, a beast of an Akakie twice Nelzod’s size, looked up from his scanner. “You are not going to believe this, Sub-Commander. The entire planet is run by an AI.”

Nelzod sat up straight. “Including their fleet?”

Thalzer pointed at the bridge’s main screen. “They do not have a fleet in the traditional sense. They have that monstrous ship, and inside it are more than a million drones, and yes.”

A million drones!

Nelzod stood up and started walking back and forth. She thought about her family who was killed on Kanoor. She thought about their beautiful and prosperous planet, which was now destroyed. And the insect responsible for that was right here right now, along with his closest allies, not knowing they were followed by Nelzod.

Her body tensed and heat flushed through her limbs. This was the perfect opportunity for a surprise attack. She pictured Tarq’s corpse slowly decomposing on this alien planet. That image brought a smile to her face. She had waited for her revenge on Tarq for years, and finally, victory was within her reach.

Nelzod had thought about deploying the Voice of God and ordering the local inhabitants to kill Tarq and his companions, but that required taking a sample from the population, which would have delayed things. A better plan started forming in her mind. “You realize what that means? If we control that AI, we control that ship. We will have our own fleet!”

“With our technology, hacking into the AI’s central computer core should not be a challenge. However, this is basically a domestic computer. I do not think it can be used to wage war effectively.”

Nelzod grinned confidently. “I can fix that. I am going to give it an upgrade that will turn it into an efficient war machine.”

Thalzer looked dubious. “Are you certain you want to do this? Your previous experience with an AI did not go so well, to put it mildly.”

Nelzod shook her head. “I have learned from that incident, and I will not make the same mistakes again. Also, consider this: if we can control that ship and its drones, we can kill Tarq, Maada, and Harrison in one strike right now, cutting off the head of the serpent.”

Thalzer scratched his head, still unconvinced.

“Moreover, once we take control of this AI, what is going to stop us from making five million drones? Ten million? A hundred million? We will not need pilots. The Galaxy would be ours. Where is the AI’s central computer core?”

Thalzer pointed at the main screen again. “There are two of them. One is in that building, and it is huge. It takes up most of the structure. The second is aboard that superdreadnought right there.”

“What is Tarq doing?”

“He just contacted the local inhabitants and asked permission to send an away team.”

“Helmsman,” Nelzod raised her voice, “take us down. Land Phantom on the roof of that building.”

“Aye-aye, Sub-Commander.”
